Malcolm Tait Music Education Scholarship
The School of Music is delighted to announce a new scholarship in music education, the Malcolm Tait Music Education Scholarship. This scholarship, for postgraduate study in music education at UC, has been instituted with funds donated by Dr Malcolm Tait, a Canterbury alumni and previous Adjunct Professor.
The Harry Ellwood Scholarship in Music (value $2000)
One scholarship is awarded annually to a student in the School of Music who has completed at least one year of study at UC in violin, viola, cello, or double bass.
Graduates Association Scholarship (value $1500)
The scholarship is open to New Zealand citizens, normally UC graduates, who are studying for a Masters or Honours degree at UC in the Faculties of Arts, Commerce, Law, Music or Fine Arts. Preference may be given to applicants intending to undertake MA study.
Closing date: 1 November
Keith Laugesen Music Scholarship (value up to $10,000 a year)
The scholarship is available to graduates to support further advanced study beyond New Zealand in music performance, composition, musicology or related subjects. Applicants must hole NZ Resident Class visas or be New Zealand citizens associated with UC who intend to study at a postgraduate or more advanced level. Closing date: 1 November
New Zealand Federation of University Women (Inc) Canterbury Branch Trust Board Doctoral Scholarship
Awarded to the top woman applicant for a University of Canterbury Doctoral Scholarship from the Faculty of Arts or the Faculty of Music & Fine Arts.
The Patricia Pratt Scholarship in Musical Performance (value US$30,000 a year) (NZ Vice-Chancellor's Committee website)
This scholarship is offered to help outstanding New Zealand musical performers who have completed an Honours degree in musical performance in New Zealand to continue their musical development at a renowned international music school or conservatorium. The scholarship will be awarded for classical music performance including vocal or instrumental performance or conducting.
Applicants must be New Zealand citizens who have lived in New Zealand for at least three years immediately before the year of selection.
Anne Reid Memorial Trust Scholarship (value up to $20,000 a year)
This scholarship is available to help a graduate student from either UC or the University of Auckland to study English Literature, Music or Fine Arts overseas in an environment that encourages the completion of a course or work in progress, or the undertaking of further training in a recognised institution. Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents. Closing date: 1 October
Prizes
Alabaster Knowles Prize in Music (value $200)
The Alabaster Knowles Prize in Music consists of suitably bound books on music, or music and is open to competition annually.
Leslie Atkinson Memorial Prize in Music (value $450)
The prize is awarded annually to a piano student of outstanding ability.
Dr J C Bradshaw Prize in Music (value $200 for the purchase of books or music)
This prize is awarded annually to a UC student pursuing a MusB.
John Emeleus Prize in Keyboard Musicianship (value $100 for the purchase of books or music)
The John Emeleus Prize is awarded annually to a student of the School of Music who shows outstanding promise and ability in the field of keyboard musicianship.
The Graduates in Music Prize (value $200)
The prize is awarded annually to an outstanding first-year student of the School of Music.
The Vernon Griffiths Prize in Musical Leadership (value $850)
The prize is awarded annually to a present or past student of the School of Music who has demonstrated outstanding qualities of musical leadership.
Gladys Vincent Memorial Prize in Music (value $600 for the purchase of books or music)
The prize is awarded annually to a violin student of outstanding promise taking the Performance Course for MusB. If no violin student of sufficient promise qualifies for the award in a given year, it may be made to a viola or violoncello student taking the Performance Course of the MusB.
Michael Toovey Memorial Prize (value $1600)
The Michael Toovey Memorial Prize is awarded annually to a senior student in music and may be used at the discretion of the recipient to further their musical studies.
University Madrigal Singers Prize (value $550)
The prize is awarded annually to a senior student of the School of Music who shows outstanding promise as composer or performer in the field of vocal music. It consists of music or books to do with music.
