Hye-Won Suh

Hye-Won Suh is a highly regarded flutist based in Aotearoa New Zealand, recognized for her versatility as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player.  

Throughout her career, she has performed as a guest flutist with New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, and Auckland Symphony Orchestra, and in 2025, she joined Christchurch Symphony Orchestra as Principal Flute. 

A graduate of the University of Auckland, where she earned a Master of Music, Hye-Won also holds a Graduate Diploma from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. During her studies, she had the opportunity to learn under the mentorship of renowned flutist Elizabeth Rowe, former principal flutist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. She has also participated in masterclasses with leading American flutists such as Amy Porter, Marina Piccinini, and Paula Robison. 

Hye-Won’s impressive competition record speaks to her skill and artistry. She has won first prize in the KBB New Zealand Woodwind Competition and the Tauranga Performing Arts Competition, and was the youngest finalist in the Australian Flute Competition. Her performances include notable concertos such as the Ibert Flute Concerto and Mozart’s Flute Concerto in G, which she has performed with various orchestras. Additionally, she has held the position of Principal Flute in New Zealand’s leading youth orchestras, including NZSO National Youth Orchestra.

Throughout her educational journey, Hye-Won was the recipient of numerous scholarships, including the Anne Bellam Scholarships, John Baros Scholarship, NZSO Alex Lindsay Award, and the UOA Vice Chancellor’s Arts Support Fund. She also received a fellowship with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and was honored with the AIMES Music Award, sponsored by Albany Toyota.

Her dedication to her craft, along with her achievements both on the concert stage and in educational settings, has cemented Hye-Won Suh’s reputation as one of New Zealand's leading flutists.
