Master of Sport Coaching and Coach Development

Develop the skills to operate at an advanced level as a sports performance or high-performance coach or coach developer.

The Master of Sport Coaching and Coach Development at UC builds on the foundational PGCert and PGDip to develop your ability to lead, design, and evaluate coach learning within complex sport systems.

The master’s programme includes independent research into coaching and coach developer challenges, and prepares you for a career in leadership roles across Aotearoa New Zealand’s sports coaching and high-performance environments as well as international sport systems.

Master of Sport Coaching and Coach Development

  • Develop advanced professional competence in sports coaching and sports coach development.
  • Examine scientific and analytical approaches to sports performance.
  • Undertake courses, project work, creative work and an applied research or project component, delivered via a blended learning model.

Master of Sport Coaching and Coach Development

To gain entry into the Master of Sport Coaching and Coach Development at UC, you must hold a sport related Aotearoa New Zealand degree, or equivalent, with at least a B Grade Average in 300-level courses, or have qualified for a Postgraduate Diploma in Sport Coaching and Coach Development, or an equivalent qualification with at least a B Grade Average.

Master of Sport Coaching and Coach Development

The Master of Sport Coaching and Coach Development comprises 180 points. You must complete: 

  • 30 points from compulsory courses
  • 30 points from elective courses in group 1
  • 30 points from elective courses in group 2
  • and 60 points from elective courses in group 3.  

Beginning in either February or July, this degree will take 1.5 years of full-time study to complete, or up to 4 years part-time study.

Graduates of the MSpCCDev may progress to further postgraduate doctoral degree study (PhD or DHSc).

Master of Sport Coaching and Coach Development

Graduates of the MSpCCDev are qualified for senior performance and high-performance sports coaching and coach developer leadership roles that demand advanced, research-informed decision-making and the capability to shape sports coaching systems.

Graduates may find work as:

  • High-performance or performance-level sports coaches
  • Senior sports coach developers/coach educators
  • Coaching system leads
  • Talent pathway managers
  • Programme designers and evaluators
  • Professional learning leaders within National Sporting Organisations (NSOs), High Performance Sport New Zealand (HPSNZ), aligned environments, academies, and performance programmes.
