Why Planning Matters in Engineering First Year
EFY forms the foundation for entry into Year 2 BE(Hons) disciplines. Course selection, academic engagement, and performance during EFY can affect:
- eligibility for specific disciplines
- competitiveness when disciplines are oversubscribed
- flexibility if you change your discipline preferences.
Early planning can help keep more options available.
Keeping Multiple Discipline Options Open
Students are encouraged to plan their EFY programme to maintain eligibility for more than one engineering discipline wherever possible.
This may include:
- understanding which courses are required for different disciplines
- ensuring core courses are completed on time
- considering how Semester Two course selections may affect eligibility.
Because discipline requirements can differ, planning ahead is important, particularly if you are still exploring your discipline preferences.
Reviewing and Updating Your Programme of Study
It may be appropriate for some students to review or update their Semester Two course selections as their goals or discipline interests become clearer.
Student Advisors and Kaitoko can assist with:
- reviewing your current programme of study
- discussing discipline‑specific requirements
- identifying opportunities to maintain or expand eligibility
- advising on any changes before key deadlines.
Maximising Your Opportunities Through Academic Engagement
As places disciplines are allocated based on GPA ranking, students are advised to engage fully in their studies throughout EFY. This includes:
- attending lectures, workshops, and tutorials
- asking questions when content is unclear
- participating in available support programmes, such as EngMe and PALS
- making use of wider UC learning and wellbeing support services.
Strong engagement supports academic success and improves competitiveness where disciplines are oversubscribed.
Exploring Disciplines While You Study
Many students refine their discipline preferences during EFY. The Engineering Faculty provides opportunities to explore different disciplines and understand future career pathways.
Students are encouraged to:
- attend faculty and discipline‑specific events
- seek advice about discipline pathways
- engage with UC Careers to explore engineering career options.
Keeping an open mind during EFY can help you make informed decisions when ranking your discipline preferences.
