HOW TO APPLY

Exceptional circumstances - GPA Adjustment

If you experienced serious personal circumstances that significantly affected your academic performance in a semester of your Engineering First Year, the Faculty may be able to adjust how your GPA is calculated when considering your Second Year application.

This is not an appeal process. It is a mechanism to ensure equitable consideration of your application.

Who should apply

This option may be relevant if you experienced serious circumstances — such as a significant health issue, bereavement, or other major personal event — that directly affected your performance in a specific semester.

How to apply

You must apply before the Second Year application deadline (1 November). Applications submitted after this date will not be considered.

To apply, email the Associate Dean (Academic) via:  engdegreeadvice@canterbury.ac.nz

Your email should include:

  • A clear explanation of the circumstances that affected your study
  • Supporting evidence (e.g. a medical certificate, counsellor's letter, or other relevant documentation)

An interview may be required as part of the process.

Getting Advice

If you are unsure whether your situation qualifies, we strongly encourage you to contact a Student Advisor at engdegreeadvice@canterbury.ac.nz before applying. They can help you understand whether this pathway is appropriate for you.
