Climate change, natural hazards, ageing infrastructure and social inequity are reshaping how communities live, work and plan for the future. Meeting these challenges means helping communities prepare for disruption, recover faster, and protect the people and places they depend on.
In Aotearoa New Zealand, these challenges are immediate and interconnected. Following the Waitaha Canterbury earthquakes, Ōtautahi Christchurch became an internationally recognised example of disaster recovery, urban regeneration and community resilience. This experience continues to shape UC's research, partnerships and commitment to helping communities adapt, recover and thrive.
UC researchers work across many areas of resilience research, including:
- climate adaptation
- natural hazards and earthquake engineering
- resilient infrastructure
- sustainable energy and water security
- emergency management and risk communication
- community wellbeing
This work supports communities across Aotearoa New Zealand and around the world.
UC's resilience research helps advance global priorities for a safer, fairer and more sustainable world - contributing to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
