Master of Software Engineering

The Master of Software Engineering at UC will develop your advanced knowledge of software engineering so you can design, implement, and validate software intensive systems across industries.

Through the study of contemporary practice you will gain specialised, research‑informed, industry‑relevant skills in the architecture, security, design, and processing of software engineering.

Master of Software Engineering

  • Examine advanced software engineering, web architectures, and industry relevant artificial intelligence. 
  • Experience project based learning that exposes you to emerging technologies and authentic, industry aligned practices.
  • Undertake a capstone or research project.
  • Complete assignments, labs, case studies, group projects, reports, presentations, and exams.

Master of Software Engineering

To enrol in the Master of Software Engineering at UC you must provide evidence of work experience or demonstrated leadership in extracurricular activities and have qualified for one of the following with at least a B Grade Point Average:

  • Bachelor of Computer Science
  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science
  • Bachelor of Software Engineering
  • Postgraduate Certificate of Software Engineering
  • Postgraduate Diploma of Software Engineering
  • Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Software Engineering
  • Or an equivalent qualification from an Aotearoa New Zealand university.

Master of Software Engineering

The Master of Software Engineering involves compulsory courses, elective courses, and work experience.

To complete the Master of Software Engineering you must provide evidence of at least 300 hours of relevant work experience in software engineering by passing SENG602 and SENG603.

You must also be credited with 180 points made up of:

  • 135 points from compulsory courses
  • The remaining 45 points from elective courses

At least 45 of your total points must be from SENG 600-level courses.

Master of Software Engineering

You must complete a total of 180 points including:

135 points from the following compulsory courses, with at least 45 of those points from SENG 600-level courses:

Graduates of the Master of Software Engineering may apply for Doctoral study (PhD) in Software Engineering/Computer Science.

Master of Software Engineering

Master of Software Engineering graduates will be prepared for advanced roles in software engineering and architecture across public organisations, private companies or in self-employment. You may find employment as a:

  • software engineer/architect
  • software security engineer
  • software quality/verification specialist
  • technical lead
  • research and innovation engineer.
