Master of Literacy in Education
Drive innovation and change in the education sector in Aotearoa New Zealand, and internationally, with a master’s degree in literacy education.
The MLitEd develops advanced awareness of existing issues in reading and literacy education, and the ability to pose informed solutions that address inequities. Examine literacy underachievement in various contexts and focus on issues that support young, at-risk learners with a range of literacy difficulties.
Master of Literacy in Education
- Study the foundations of literacy development, writing, and literacy difficulties
- Develop advanced knowledge of theories, methodologies, research and pedagogies in literacy learning, literacy difficulties and educational practice in literacy.
- The option of a small-scale research project and dissertation.
Master of Literacy in Education
To be accepted into the Master of Literacy in Education, you must have qualified for an Aotearoa New Zealand bachelor’s degree in Education or a related discipline, or equivalent qualification, with at least a B grade average.

Master of Literacy in Education
The Master of Literacy in Education at UC comprises 180 points. This includes 90 points of compulsory courses and 90 points from one of the following options:
- 90 points of elective courses; or
- 90 points of research methods and a dissertation – this pathway is subject to approval by the Programme Coordinator.
Within the 180 points, a minimum of 45 points of Level 9 study is required.
Beginning in February, July, or November 2027, the programme will take up to 1.5 years full-time or up to 4 years part-time to complete.

Coursework or research pathway
Choose between completing elective coursework or a research dissertation.
For the coursework pathway, choose three courses from the following:
- EDME694 Research Methods in Education (30 points)
- EDME417 Enhancing Reading Development in Young Children at Risk
- EDME653 Meeting the needs of students with literacy difficulties (30 points)
- EDME659 Advancing Pacific Educational Success (30 points)
- EDME610 Structured Literacy Systems: Design, Evaluation and Leadership (30 points)
- EDME685 Culturally Inclusive Pedagogies: Motivating Diverse Learners (30 points)
- LING400 English Structures (30 points)
For the dissertation pathway, complete the following:
If you have completed your MLitEd degree through the dissertation pathway with at least a B+ grade average, you may be eligible for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
Master of Literacy in Education
Graduates of the Master of Literacy in Education will be equipped for a range of leadership, policy, or advisory roles in the education sector, from early childhood centres and schools, through to government organisations, research settings, and specialised education.
