How the GPA ranking for entry to BE(Hons) is calculated

12 May 2026
HOW TO APPLY

How the GPA ranking for entry to BE(Hons) is calculated:

1.      The GPA is calculated from the Schedule C and S courses only; i.e. non engineering electives, and foundation courses (e.g. EMTH117) are excluded from the calculation as these engineering focused courses are the best predictor of future performance in the BE(Hons). All Schedule S courses are included in the GPA calculation i.e. even for disciplines that do not require them.

2.      In the case of a course having been repeated, the average of the grades is taken with a weighting that is still equivalent to 15 credits of study.

3.      For those who have completed STAR courses, MATH199/198 is included as part of the GPA calculations as a Schedule C course if there is no EMTH118/119 taken in EFY.

4.      The Associate Dean (Academic) can vary the basis of the calculation in order to respond equitably to exceptional individual circumstances.

Schedule C – Compulsory for all Engineering First Year students:

i.  ENGR100 Engineering Academic Skills

ii.  ENGR101 Foundations of Engineering

iii.  EMTH118 Engineering Mathematics 1A

iv. EMTH119 Engineering Mathematics 1B

v. PHYS101 Engineering Physics A: Mechanics, Waves and Thermal Physics

vi. COSC131 Introduction to Programming for Engineers.

Schedule S – Required for certain engineering disciplines

(these are included in the GPA calculation even for disciplines that do not require them)

i.  Chemical and Process Engineering: CHEM111 Chemical Principles and Processes

ii.  Civil Engineering, Forest Engineering and Mechanical Engineering: CHEM111 Chemical Principles and Processes AND ENGR102 Engineering Mechanics

iii.  Computer Engineering and Electrical and Electronic Engineering: MATH120 Discrete Mathematics, OR COSC122 Introduction to Computer Science

iv. Mechatronics Engineering: ENGR102 Engineering Mechanics

v. Software Engineering: COSC122 Introduction to Computer Science AND MATH120 Discrete Mathematics.
