In APA style you can cite conference papers published in books or journals, as well as conference papers or posters that haven't been formally published. Learn how to cite a conference papers.


Conference proceedings may be formally published in a book or journal. If conference proceedings are published:

In a book

Use the same format as for a book or book chapter, for example

Bowles, T., Musgrove, E., & Hornsby, Z. (2009). The consistency of attachment styles: An experiment eliciting a response to acceptance or rejection. In Z. J. Hazelwood (Ed.), Connecting research and practice in relationships: Conference proceedings (pp. 9–14). Australian Psychological Society.


In-text citation:

Bowles et al. (2009) ... OR (Bowles et al., 2009)


In a journal

Use the same format as a journal article, for example

Helton, W. S., Kemp, S., & Walton, D. (2013). Individual differences in movements in response to natural disasters: Tsunami and earthquake case studies. Proceedings of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society Annual Meeting57(1), 858–862.


In-text citation:

Helton et al. (2013) ... OR (Helton et al., 2013)

Presenter, A. A. (Year, Month Days). Title of paper or poster [Type of contribution]. Conference name, Location. DOI or URL


  • Use this template for paper presentations and poster presentations that are not formally published as a book, edited book chapter or journal article.
  • The date (Year, Month Days) should match the day or days of the full conference to aid retrieval, even though a presentation probably occurred on only a single day.
  • For location, provide the city; state, province or territory if applicable (U.S. two-letter postal code abbreviations and similar abbreviations in other countries, if available); and the country name spelt out in full, for example:
    • New York, NY, United States
      Sydney, NSW, Australia
      Christchurch, New Zealand.
