Postgraduate Certificate in Illustration

Introduction

With UC’s Postgraduate Certificate in Illustration (PGCertIllust), you can develop your technical and artistic skills across a range of traditional and digital media.

Learn techniques for visual storytelling and narrative to create compelling stories and creative media for industry, from concept art to marketing and more.

This Certificate is particularly suited to professional artists wanting to upskill or train in new illustrative tools, or recent graduates wanting to build a portfolio and enter the creative industry.

What will my study involve?

  • Customise your study by choosing courses from options centred around traditional/digital tools and techniques, visual language and communication, narration, or business skills.
  • Create your own distinctive visual style by either specialising in a particular medium or by gaining experience in a range of traditional and digital forms.

Entry requirements

To apply for the Postgraduate Certificate in Illustration, you will need to have one of the following from your previous studies:

  • a bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject, with at least a B grade average in your 300-level courses
  • any bachelor’s degree and relevant professional or other work experience
  • appropriate practical, professional, or scholarly experience
  • other qualifications of an equivalent standard.

If English is not your first language, you are also required to meet UC's English language requirements. If you need help meeting these requirements, or would like to practise your English skills before studying, UC offers English for Academic Purposes (EAP) language programmes.

Postgraduate Certificate in Illustration

How do I plan my certificate?

The PGCertIllust is made up of 60 points (two courses) which you will select from a list of options. These courses include significant practical work, such as producing sketchbooks, portfolios, or visual essays.

Starting in February or July (depending on the courses you choose), you can complete the Certificate within 6 months full-time, or up to 18 months part-time.

Choose two courses from the following:

  • FINA630 Business of Illustration
  • FINA631 Illustration Mediums
  • FINA632 Language of Illustration
  • FINA633 Narrative Illustration

Postgraduate Certificate in Illustration

Further study

UC also offers a Postgraduate Diploma in Illustration and a Master of Illustration. Both offer more courses than the PGCertIllust such as research projects and internships.

You may choose to transfer your completed courses from the Certificate to the Diploma or Master’s, with approval.
