The NZFC was established in 1996 and is held annually to promote the discussion, dissemination, and development of finance-related research within New Zealand. The event was due to be held in-person at Ōtautahi Christchurch’s newly constructed Te Pae Christchurch Convention and Exhibition Centre; however due to COVID red light restrictions it was delivered virtually through a series of webinars.

Regardless of restrictions, Professor Jedrzej Bialkowski, chair of the organising committee, says that “Our virtual conference was a great success, we had high participation, 20% higher support from sponsors, and we secure top notch keynote speakers including President of the American Finance Association Professor Laura Starks and CEO of the New Zealand Shareholder’s Association Oliver Mander.”

The presence of Laura T. Starks at the NZFC was a first for her and a highlight for attendees as she delivered key findings and takeaways from research in her presentation Climate Risk and Investors. Oliver Mander addressed the need for research that is important to Aotearoa New Zealand capital markets in his keynote speech titled Why Corporate Governance Quality Matters for Investors.

Professor Bialkowski notes that “Despite being online, the 26th NZFC conference, as in past, was great platform to discuss and exchange researcher ideas. I am glad that number of presented papers had direct implication for NZ capital markets. “

The 26th NZFC was great opportunity for UC Business School to support development of high-quality research in Aotearoa. Winning 3 out of the 8 awards, including the prestigious BLR cup and NZX award, has demonstrated that our Department of Economics and Finance is one of leading research centres in the country.
