On Thursday 11th April, the UC Business School ran its first Teachers Commerce Conference in Canterbury since the 2011 earthquakes. The event, sponsored by MYOB, saw high school commerce teachers travel from around New Zealand to attend various sessions led by public and private sector leaders, speaking about issues relevant to their area.
Attendees were also given the opportunity to tour the offices of Kilmarnock & EY, as well as University of Canterbury’s world-class facilities – the Trading Room, Centre for Entrepreneurship spaces, and the new Product Design degree.
Presentations were given by Sue McVeigh and Ellex Stewart from NZQA, Shailan Patel from MYOB, Karen Haig from ChristchurchNZ, Kendall Flutey from Banquer, and an industry panel that included Tim Jones from Kilmarnock and David Winter from EY.
Speakers discussed topics such as the fourth industrial revolution, how technology is shaping business, and the adaptability needed to not only survive, but thrive, in the ever-changing business world. Other sessions looked at the opportunities in Canterbury now and the future, and a deep dive into Gen Z as a generation of social entrepreneurs.
With the help of MYOB’s sponsorship, commerce teachers in New Zealand were given the opportunity to take away current industry information that will support the next generation of accountants, innovators and entrepreneurs. In turn, the company gained insight into how they can continue to support teachers in helping students successfully transition from secondary education, said Education Manager for MYOB Shailan Patel.
