HOW TO APPLY

From China to University of Canterbury, New Zealand
Master of Marketing

What do you like most about UC?

I appreciate the people at UC the most. The staff, professors, and students are friendly, responsible, and thoughtful. Talking and working with them is a pleasure and offers many opportunities for reflection and personal growth, and everyone is always willing to help others to the best of their abilities.

The campus environment is both pleasant and inspiring, with beautiful nature and a warm atmosphere. Facilities are well arranged and easy to access, supporting not only your academic goals but also your hobbies and overall wellbeing as a student. It’s also easy to meet people who share your interests and to experience a strong sense of inclusivity.

What do you like about your degree and major at UC?

The education at UC is both practical and diverse, with many real-life cases integrated into our courses that provide valuable insights and experiences. Studying real business examples helps us better understand, apply, and analyse the theories we learn.

The compulsory courses have been especially useful in building a solid foundation for a business mindset and understanding how real businesses operate. This broader knowledge helps us keep a wider perspective. At the same time, the specialised marketing courses are highly focused and practical, providing timely and in-depth perspectives on specific aspects of the market and making our learning both relevant and applicable.

Have you participated in any memorable events or opportunities on campus?

I joined the UC Inclusive Challenge organised by UC Centre for Entrepreneurship and UC Business School, teaming up with three other girls from completely different backgrounds. We designed an event and delivered a short pitch, winning third place and receiving funding support to bring our idea to life. Turning the idea into reality was challenging, yet we worked together to create and plan everything required for the event.

This was my first time working closely with local classmates, which came with many cultural and language challenges. The experience gave me valuable teamwork and project management skills as well as a deeper appreciation for cross-cultural collaboration.

Are you involved in any UC clubs, programmes, or initiatives?

I was selected to be part of the 2025 Global Leader programme, in which mentors plan training sessions and events both on and off campus to give students opportunities to practise our leadership skills in real-life situations. Under their thoughtful guidance, my mentors helped me cultivate the event management and marketing skills that I wanted to focus on in a safe and supportive environment.

The students in the programme came from nearly ten different countries, bringing many cultural and personal differences. With sincerity, patience, and empathy, we learned to better understand one another and see the unique strengths of each individual. This experience taught me genuine respect and deepened my sense of empathy, which I truly value.

Have you taken part in any internships or practical experiences at UC?

I interned in a marketing role for a Christchurch-based medical device company. During this project, I gained first-hand insights into real companies and their products, which enabled me to develop a clearer understanding of the actual market environment. I was also entrusted with formulating marketing strategies tailored to specific products by conducting independent research and interviews with in-market experts.

My supervisor provided regular feedback and constructive suggestions, and collaborating directly with company leaders allowed me to further develop professional skills in a real business setting. Overall, this project strengthened my research and analytical capabilities and enhanced my strategic thinking and industry awareness, thereby preparing me well for my future career.

Do you work while studying?

I currently work part-time as a UC Host for UC Events and Communications, supporting a wide range of UC events both on and off campus. This has allowed me to strengthen my teamwork, communication, and event management skills, while also deepening my understanding of UC’s culture and local New Zealand culture and gaining valuable local work experience. Working on these events has greatly enhanced both my practical abilities and my overall perspective on event management.

Have you got any advice for other international students?

I would encourage other international students to take part in the wide variety of events organised by faculties, clubs, and different groups on campus. Be brave and open to trying new things and meeting new people. Every opportunity can bring valuable rewards: making new friends, learning from different cultures, gaining insights into your field of study, and experiencing personal growth. All of these efforts will help shape you into a better version of yourself, often beyond what you could have imagined.
