Your degree is a transformation for you, tell us about that!

I came to New Zealand from Colombia about 20 years ago. Back there, being an artist wasn't really an option so I became an engineer instead. Over time I eventually saved up enough money to do what I really wanted to do, which is study fine art.

How does it feel to be studying something you love?

It's amazing. From my perspective, education is a privilege so I feel honoured to be here. It's also great fun being around so many young people. I feel like a young person with no responsibilities again! It's a taste of freedom.

Favourite thing about your particular degree?

The freedom of exploration and the quality of the teaching. We can do whatever we want to do, and have the support and guidance to do it. As a Master’s student I get to choose my own project and have my own studio area in the fine art department. I’m loving it.

What do you want to do when you finish your degree?

I'm already a freelance photographer, and everything I learn at UC I can apply to my professional life. I’m interested in using photography as a tool for social change. Through connections at UC I was able to contribute to Widows of Shuhada, a documentary series which follows the lives of four women widowed by the Christchurch mosque attacks. I'd like to continue doing that sort of work when I graduate.

Why does social change work resonate with you?

I love the number of people you meet of different ethnicities and backgrounds. You understand how similar we are, despite our differences. I love feeling like I'm helping others and making a difference.

What makes UC a good place to study?

It's a totally different experience from the type of study where you sit down and listen to your lecturers. We’re a family at UC. There’s so much support for students and it’s a fun place to learn. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful.

How have you changed as a person at UC?

It's been incredible – I'm completely different now. As an engineer, everything was black and white, zeros and ones. Now as an artist I have a much more critically engaged and searching mind. I’ve also become more social. I used to be very shy but in photography you have to talk to people.

Any advice for others?

Be courageous. I had an amazing career as an engineer, but I wasn't happy. Deciding to change is hugely scary, but once you jump in it's actually okay. You adapt to your circumstances and it's not that hard. I’m so grateful to have done it. I have such a strong connection to art. My heart is here.
