How to stay safe this winter

11 July 2025

Welcome to Semester two. Campus is busy which means there’s a lot of people around and it’s easy to become complacent when it comes to campus safety.

HOW TO APPLY

It’s important to be aware of winter hazards on campus and knowing how and where to report them.

Commuting

  • Allow time to fully defrost your car. This is a reminder that it’s illegal to peer through a defrosted section the size of your hand.

  • Take care on painted surfaces and in areas that don’t get much sun during winter when you are walking, scootering or skateboarding.

  • Consider your footwear, use handrails when you can and if it’s safer, opt to walk on the grass during frosty mornings.

Cycle safety

  • Always wear a helmet

  • Be seen on your bike with lights and by wearing high vis

  • Lock up your bike - UC Security is taking a number of anti-theft measures, including offering D Locks to UC staff and students at cost price (currently $45). Go to the security office to take advantage of this offer.

Noticing your surroundings

It’s easy to keep scrolling on your phone while you’re on the move, so make sure you notice where you’re going, or who might be coming towards you. Watch out for crowds in between lectures and look up when you’re crossing roads.

Emergency contact details

Winter is a great time to log into myUC and check your emergency details are still correct and up to date.

Help Point Towers on campus

There are 11 help point towers on campus, which are designed to provide information any time (push black button) and immediate assistance in an emergency (push red button).

UC Security’s phone number – 0800 823 637

UC Security staff are on campus 24/7, therefore someone will always be there to help you in an emergency at UC. Be prepared by saving UC Security’s number into your phone.

Emergency Procedures – Lecture theatres

All departments have an Emergency Procedures flip chart outlining what to do in different types of emergencies. The flip charts are on display throughout the University and can be found in all lecture theatres. A PDF version of each page can be found on the UC website Emergency Procedures page.

Fire safety

Check that all furniture, clothing, and belongings are at least one metre from an electric heater.

Reporting an incident on Assura

If you get injured or see something unsafe while on campus, please report it through UC’s health and safety system, Assura. Reporting through Assura will increase our visibility of hazards, so we can correct any issues and make UC safer. Health and safety is everyone’s responsibility, and by working together we can protect the community. More information on reporting an incident or hazard can be found on the UC website Report an Incident page. Read the FAQs.
