The Diploma in University Studies (DipUniSt) allows for conditional entry into first year degree courses for students who are just short of NCEA University Entrance or have been away from study for a while. Upon successful completion of the DipUniSt, students can begin the second year of their bachelor’s degree.
The Diploma in University Studies combines introductory studies in your chosen subject area, the skills to succeed at degree level, and a comprehensive introduction to university life.
Offering extra workshops and tutorials, the diploma is designed to help you build your skills as a learner and introduce you to all the academic, community, and social opportunities available at the University of Canterbury.
This programme is offered to domestic students (New Zealand or Australian citizens).
See the International Diploma in University Studies for more details about the international student transition pathway.

The Diploma is made up of 120 points, or eight courses in total. These are taught on UC’s campus, where you will be in the same courses as other UC students, but with additional time allocated specifically for Diploma students to help you master the course material and complete assignments.
You will also be assigned a Student Advisor who will meet with your before, during, and after the Diploma to check on your progress, support your learning, and help plan the courses to take.
Starting in February, the programme will take two semesters (one year) to complete full-time or can be completed within two years part-time.
After completing the Diploma, you will be guaranteed entry into most bachelor’s degrees at UC with credit for the courses you have completed.
For full details, see the Regulations for the Diploma in University Studies.
The remaining four courses to complete the Diploma will be chosen from the bachelor’s degree you plan to continue onto. Your Student Advisor will help you to select these.
After completing the Diploma, you will be able to enrol into select bachelor’s degrees at UC, depending on the courses you have taken.
Our Student Advisors will advise you of your options.
