We would like to acknowledge the unexpected passing of our Director of Criminal Justice, Dr Helen Farley this year. Helen had been a strong and passionate advocate for our Criminal Justice programmes and students. She is missed.
Dr Jayson Ware has been appointing acting Director of Criminal Justice. It has been a busy time in the role; preparing for the roll out of courses for the Certificate in Criminal Justice through UC Online, preparing for the Bachelor of Criminal Justice Programme Review in early 2026 and redesigning the governance around the Criminal Justice Programmes.
Our undergraduate offerings, still unique in the New Zealand market continue to attract good numbers, and it is hoped that the Bachelor of Criminal Justice moving to an online offering will offer opportunities for students, and criminal justice sector employees, from throughout the country an opportunity to engage with the programme.
2026 will see our team expand with new staff, and the progress of a redeveloped Bachelor of Criminal Justice. The revised bachelor’s programme will bring in a required minor to the qualification, allowing students to create a smaller body of knowledge to increase employability. We are also increasing our focus on experiential learning through internships and group projects and offering a range of new courses including a new Criminal Justice in Practice course which will support students to enter the workforce with greater practical knowledge. The revised degree will be offered from 2027.
