Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) is an international standardised test of Chinese language proficiency. It assesses the ability of non-native speakers to communicate in life, study, and work. Learn more about these examinations.
The Confucius Institute at the University of Canterbury (CIUC) administers three internationally recognised Chinese language proficiency assessments: the HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test), HSKK (HSK Speaking Test), and YCT (Chinese Proficiency Test-Youth).
These examinations are developed and overseen by Chinese Testing International Co., Ltd. (CTI) in Beijing, and are conducted globally, including in New Zealand. For test guidelines, sample materials, and further information, please visit the official CTI website at www.chinesetest.cn. Exam preparation materials can also be purchased through the Confucius Institute’s online shop.
Candidates who achieve high scores on the HSK may be eligible to apply for scholarships offered by the Centre for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) to pursue further studies in China. For details regarding the scholarship application process, please refer to the scholarship page on our website.
STEP 1: Register with the Confucius Institute at the University of Canterbury via the following link: https://www.chinesetest.cn/kdInfo?id=2063202.
Ensure that "paper-based test" is selected as the test format and "Confucius Institute at University of Canterbury" is chosen as the designated test centre.
Please note that all Chinese Proficiency Tests are conducted in-person on the University of Canterbury Ilam campus, and there are no online or electronic examination options available.
STEP 2: Complete the online payment through the Chinese Proficiency Test Payment portal.
As registration typically closes about a month before the exam date, please ensure both steps are completed before the registration deadline (see the table above) to secure your spot for the exam.
Candidates must download and print their admission ticket from the Chinese Test website (www.chinesetest.cn) one week prior to the test date.
Both the printed ticket and the original ID used for registration are required for entry to the examination.
Test results will be published approximately one month after the examination and can be accessed through the official website: www.chinesetest.cn.
Certificates will be available for collection from CIUC approximately two months after the test date.
