During peak periods in the morning and afternoon, Ilam Primary students manage the pedestrian crossing to help their classmates – and other members of the community – cross the road safely.
If you’re driving or cycling through this area, remember to stop when the crossing signs are out. This applies to cyclists as well, even if the signs aren’t in front of the cycle lane.
There was a recent close call between a cyclist and a student of Ilam Primary. Thankfully the student wasn’t injured, but both parties were understandably shaken. It’s a reminder of how quickly things can happen if our attention slips.
Even outside the staffed crossing times, people still use this crossing regularly. Drivers and cyclists are required to stop for pedestrians waiting to cross, so please slow down and keep an eye out when travelling through the area.
While Ilam Road is a busy example close to campus, the same care should be taken at pedestrian crossings wherever you encounter them.
Road Safety Week runs from 4-10 May and Facilities Management are planning an activity on C-block lawn to support continuing education and habit building for all UC students and staff – keep an eye out for more.
