Alcohol ban in Ilam
There is a 24/7 alcohol ban in the Riccarton-Ilam area. This means you’re not allowed to consume alcohol or carry open containers of alcohol on the streets and in public spaces in the area, including Ilam Road, Ilam Fields and University Drive. Read more about what this means here.

Make sure you save UC Security's number - 0800 823 637 - in your phone. Security staff are on campus 24/7. They’re trained in first aid and are contactable at any time. Find more about what they do here.
Te Ara Pourewa o Ngāi Tahu | UC Help Point Towers
The pourewa (towers) across campus will put you in voice contact with the UC Security team. They’re easy to use – push the black button for information and the red button in an emergency. Read more about UC Help Point Towers here.
Secure your bikes and vehicles
Cycling to campus is a fantastic way to save money, get fit and contribute to a better city. However, thieves can take advantage of bikes that are not properly secured. Use one of UC's bike parking facilities around campus.
Secure bike stands are electronically accessed and have video surveillance. Simply swipe your Canterbury Card to get inside. Please make sure that you still lock your bike with a D lock.
Secure bike stands can be found at:
Engineering (Creyke Road)
Behind Central Lecture theatres
Meremere (Law)
Halls of residence - please check with your hall
If you drive to campus, you can make your car more secure by ensuring there are no valuables visible inside and using a steering bar lock as a deterrent. You can purchase D locks for your bike and steering locks for your car from the Security office.
You should insure all valuable property, including bikes, cars and motorbikes.
Please report any suspicious behaviour to security immediately on 0800 823 637.
