Professor Moran, currently UC’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic, will begin a five-year term on 1 February 2027. Professor Cheryl de la Rey will remain Vice-Chancellor until 31 January 2027.
Following a comprehensive international search that attracted a high-calibre field of candidates, UC Tumu Kaunihera | Chancellor Hon Amy Adams said Professor Moran brings the qualities and experience Council was seeking.
“Catherine has a remarkable record of turning ambition into delivery – leading significant academic transformation, improving outcomes for students and building strong, trusted partnerships across the University, government, industry and our communities.
“She combines a deep understanding of UC with the experience, energy and ambition needed to lead it into its next chapter. Council is tremendously pleased with her appointment and has every confidence in the leadership she will bring.”
The Chancellor also acknowledged Professor de la Rey, who by the end of her term will have completed eight years of dedicated service to UC and an 18-year career as a Vice-Chancellor in the higher education sector.

Professor Moran has been Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic since 2020. She has strengthened UC’s approach to student success and overseen the establishment and growth of Tuihono UC | UC Online.
Her leadership responsibilities have also included academic delivery, curriculum, artificial intelligence (AI) and innovation in teaching and learning.
Professor Moran said she was deeply honoured to be appointed.
