Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury (UC) hosted over 30 secondary school principals from across Canterbury and the West Coast this week. Tumu Whakarae | Vice-Chancellor Professor Cheryl de la Rey welcomed attendees and emphasised the shared commitment of UC and secondary schools to ensure student success.
The meeting provided an opportunity to showcase UC’s facilities and opportunities, including the rapidly developing Dovedale Campus, which is home to UC’s Digital Screen department and digital production facility Kōawa Studios, the first commercial studio of its kind in the South Island.
Principals also heard about UC’s wide-ranging engagement with secondary schools and their students. From Te Rā Tūhura | Discovery Day, which brings Year 12 students and teachers to campus to explore university life; to Aukaha Tau 12, which welcomes taiohi Māori and connects them with UC’s community, study pathways and support; as well as Rongo o te Wā, a two-day conference for careers advisors to learn more about the UC student experience and the ongoing support provided by UC Future Students’ advisors.
UC leaders shared updates on initiatives such as Kia Angitu, an internationally renowned student success programme that supports the early experiences of UC students through Peer Assisted Learning Support (PALS) and early engagement tools.
With enrolments now over 26,000 and 89% of UC graduates in work or further study within a year, UC continues to build on its reputation as a high-quality university of choice. UC is focused, like principals, on helping young people reach their full potential.
