Obligations if you are under 18
If you are an international student under 18 when you start University at UC, it’s vital that you are aware of the additional obligations that apply to you.
Your parents or legal guardian must also read this information; it is a legal requirement.
The obligations end on the day that you turn 18 (your birthday).
Accommodation
As you’ll be under 18 years old when you start at the University of Canterbury, the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students says you must live in one of the following types of accommodation:
- Homestay and private board
- Halls of Residence
- With a Designated Caregiver (relative or close family friend)
- With your parents
You can only live in one of these types of accommodation while you are under 18. If you live in any other type of accommodation, your enrolment is likely to be cancelled.
Your parents must sign an indemnity document (which we will email you) noting your choice of accommodation. If your parents would like you to live with a Designated Caregiver, special arrangements must be made with the Student Care Team. These arrangements include police checks and home inspection. Contact the Student Care office office for further information.
Contact with parents
Before you enrol, your parent/s or legal guardian must communicate with Student Care about your enrolment and well-being. After your enrolment, a Student Care Advisor will keep in regular contact with your parent/s or legal guardian to keep them updated about your welfare.
Regular meetings with Student Care Team
As long as you are under 18, you must meet on a regular basis with your Student Care Advisor who will check that you’ve settled in OK, discuss your studies, accommodation, general health and well-being and talk about any concerns you may have. Regular meetings with your Student Care Advisor are a requirement of your enrolment as an under 18 international student.
