Master of Architectural Engineering with an endorsement in Integrated Building Design
Graduate Structural Engineer, Seismic Solutions Ltd., Lower Hutt, Wellington
Why did you choose to come to New Zealand?
The reason I chose to come here is because, New Zealand is famous for its beautiful nature, peaceful people, and low rate of corruption. Furthermore, international students can have the opportunity to work in NZ. Life at UC, Christchurch as an international student is fun and challenging at the same time.
Why UC?
I was working as a structural engineer in Surabaya for about 2 years before I came to UC. I chose to study at UC was because UC is well known for their Engineering programme, especially Civil Engineering (building-related major).
What inspired you to study your Master of Architectural Engineering degree?
UC is definitely one of the best choices, because there is so much civil engineering research going on campus and lots of working professionals who are teaching there, which makes the lectures way more practical.
Tells us about any UC clubs or events you have been involved in. How has this enriched your university experience?
UC Toastmaster is one of the best clubs to hone your public speaking, teamwork, and communication skills which definitely benefit you in your professional development.
Where are you employed now and what tasks does your job entail?
Months after graduating I was still looking for job and UC provided a wide variety of resources that helped me to get through it. UC Careers hosted LinkedIn classes, CV & resume checks, and job opportunities. Right now, I’m a graduate structural engineer with Seismic Solutions Ltd. My daily job tasks include structural design, structural drafting, and construction monitoring.
How has your study experience at UC helped your work skills?
Working with fellow students in projects while at UC definitely gave me the experience on what it’s like working in a team of engineers and architects. In the future, I want to be more professional in structural designing and hoping to expand the company.
What advice would you give to someone considering studying in your degree area?
UC provides students with tons of resources and study areas to help students study better. The advice I would like to give to newcomers is to remember to manage your time wisely, set up study plans, and join study groups.
