Researching the real-world impact of interest rates on families and households

HOW TO APPLY

“If you’re passionate about a research idea, UC is a fantastic place to turn that idea into a meaningful contribution.”

Aynaz Nahavandi’s research explores a critical economic question with direct social impact: how do changing interest rates affect families and households? Her work bridges technical economic analysis with broader social outcomes, providing insight into how macroeconomic decisions ripple through everyday life.

Why UC? A Culture of Support and Belonging

For Aynaz, choosing the University of Canterbury (UC) came down to more than academic reputation—it was about culture and community.

“UC has a very inclusive, multicultural environment. I felt welcomed from day one.”

In addition to a vibrant and diverse campus, she was drawn to UC’s world-class facilities—from lecture theatres and student spaces to gyms and recreational amenities. But what truly set UC apart for Aynaz was the research support ecosystem.

“UC isn’t just about technical excellence. The Graduate School offers everything you need to grow as a researcher—academic writing, networking, and professional development workshops. It’s all here.”

Guided Research, Empowered Direction

With a strong supervisory relationship at the heart of her research journey, Aynaz credits her supervisor Professor Philip Vermuelen for giving her clarity and direction in moments of uncertainty.

“There are times when you’re lost in your research. That’s when a good supervisor makes all the difference—mine helps me find the right path, and gives me the confidence that I’m on it.”

That guidance has helped her stay focused, make real progress, and grow both academically and professionally.

The Role of Scholarships and Support

Receiving a UC scholarship has been a key enabler in Aynaz’s journey, allowing her to fully dedicate herself to her research.

“The financial support means I can prioritise my research—and also explore new skill sets beyond the technical, like leadership and communication.”

She’s also benefited from the UC Graduate School’s robust calendar of workshops and seminars that support the full development of research students beyond purely academic such as mental wellbeing, professional development and networking.

Surprising Diversity in a Distant Place

Having lived in several countries, Aynaz was pleasantly surprised by just how multicultural New Zealand—and Christchurch in particular—can be.

“Even though New Zealand is geographically isolated, I’ve found it to be impressively diverse and culturally rich.”

Living and Learning in Christchurch

Christchurch has proven to be a perfect fit for a research-focused lifestyle. Known as the Garden City, it’s both beautiful and practical.

“The cost of living is lower than other major cities, and commuting is easy. It’s also just a stunning place to live—surrounded by nature.”

Advice for Future Researchers

To anyone thinking about doing their research at UC, Aynaz offers this encouragement:

“If you have a research idea you’re passionate about, don’t hesitate. The support, the facilities, and the culture at UC will help you take that idea and make it something meaningful.”
