UC iGEM

30 April 2026

Helping students turn brewing waste into high-value biomaterials, and represent Aotearoa-New Zealand on the global stage.

HOW TO APPLY
Support the next generation of Kiwi synthetic biologists

This year UC students from Biology and Engineering are representing Aotearoa-New Zealand at iGEM, the world’s leading student synthetic biology competition.

With your support, UC’s iGEM team can fully participate in this global event and take part in the Grand Jamboree in Paris this November, where student teams from around the world present their work and connect with industry leaders, researchers, and future collaborators.

About the project

Our project, Nanobrew, aims to turn brewing waste into high-value nanocellulose - a sustainable biomaterial with applications in electronics, packaging, biotechnology, and more. It also points to a wider opportunity: transforming forestry waste, which is rich in cellulose, into new value streams for Aotearoa-New Zealand.

Why your support matters

Your donation will help us:

  • Empower the next generation of Kiwi researchers and innovators.
  • Enable UC’s iGEM team to fully participate in the competition at the Grand Jamboree in Paris
  • Create value for local brewing and forestry sectors.
  • Support the growth of future startups in New Zealand.
  • Strengthen hands-on, translational science education.

A smart investment in New Zealand’s future

iGEM is more than a competition - it is a launchpad. Alumni go on to found companies, shape policy, and lead scientific breakthroughs. You will be investing in talented people who will shape New Zealand’s scientific and economic future.

By backing Nanobrew, you help give students the tools to turn waste into opportunity, and research into outcomes that matter for Aotearoa-New Zealand.

Help us bring Nanobrew to the Grand Jamboree — and take New Zealand innovation to the
