Measuring the Perceived Risk of Autonomous Vehicles

26 January 2026

Host Faculty: Engineering

General Subject Area: Human-robot interaction, psychology

Project Level: PhD

HOW TO APPLY

Autonomous vehicles (AV) are entering our societies. While they might make the roads overall safer by reducing crashes, they are unlikely to achieve perfection in the near future. In the absence of reporting standards, autonomous vehicle manufacturers, such as Waymo, Mercedes-Benz or Tesla, are publishing their safety records in widely different ways. Although some authorities, such as the government in California, require these companies to report every incident, the results remain largely inaccessible. Users of AVs have to trust their cars with their lives.

The goal of this project is to develop measurement instruments to assess the level of trust people have in AVs. What risks are they willing to take? How can we best communicate the risks associated with AVs?
