Liquid crystals are partially ordered fluids with an elasticity thanks to spontaneous molecular alignment. They are widely used in modern display technology but are also model systems for a variety of other materials such as biological tissues or fluids. Novel phenomena arise when fluidity and elasticity are coupled to surface tension from free-moving interfaces, or fluid activity where constituents self-propel. The project mainly uses direct numerical simulations to examine the basic behaviour of liquid crystal flows. The interested student will have a passion for basic science and a solid background in mathematical analysis, numerical methods and fluid mechanics.
