Design of Unfair Dice

26 January 2026

Host Faculty: Engineering

General Subject Area: Statistics, industrial design

Project Level: Master's

HOW TO APPLY

Teaching statistics to non-mathematicians is difficult due to its abstract nature. The goal of this project is to make statistics more tangible by creating unfair dice. These dice will be included in statistics courses where the students will be asked if certain dice are similar or not.

Making an unfair dice, or loading them, is difficult, but certain strategies exist. Several parameters can be manipulated, such as cavities, weights, layout, dimensions and number of faces. The amount of unfairness needs to be controlled and tested so that students can be given unfair dice that can be tested in a realistic time frame.

The student will be expected to 3D model, produce and test the dice. A variety of production methods, for example, 3D printing, are available.
