Assessment of Accessibility for People Using Assistive Devices

27 March 2026

Host Faculty: Engineering

General Subject Area: Mechanical Engineering

Project Level: PhD

HOW TO APPLY

Accessibility is a human right. For many people with disabilities, wheelchairs enhance personal mobility. Unfortunately, many aspects of the modern built environment and recreation areas are not accessible to the population of people who use wheelchairs or other assistive devices to assist with mobility. This project looks to gather quantitative data on the accessibility of urban areas/outdoor trails in Christchurch. This could include categorising typical accessibility issues for various assistive devices. Using this data, the second aim of the project is to develop an engineering solution, or framework, which enables “barriers” in the built environment to be removed or overcome using an engineering solution. Engineering solutions could apply to the physical barrier, or adaptions to assistive devices.

If you are interested in pursuing this research project, please don't hesitate to get in contact.
