The Sustainable Energy Research Group (SERG) at the University of Canterbury is New Zealand’s largest energy systems research group, with a strong track record of international collaboration.
As an associated country to Horizon Europe, New Zealand researchers are fully eligible to participate in Pillar II projects leading or joining consortia. Our multidisciplinary team provides a unique perspective from a highly renewable, isolated energy system, making New Zealand a valuable partner for Europe’s energy transition.
SERG at the University of Canterbury contributes expertise in a wide range of Energy related topics: system modelling, hydrogen and future fuels, long-duration storage, carbon capture and storage, climate resilience, and other relevant to Cluster 5 "Climate, Energy and Mobility" funding opportunities.
Research Capacity
Why partner with SERG for Horizon Projects?
- Highly renewable power system (~90%) Advanced residential heating decarbonisation and DSM
- Natural laboratory for system resilience (earthquakes, floods, fires, extreme weather, volcanoes)
- Ideal conditions for synfuels innovation (cheap electricity, storage, biomass, low interest rates, land)
- Strong community and industry engagement
- Remote and isolated: an excellent contrast case study to European systems (energy security), and a model for remote regions (island systems)
- New Zealand’s largest energy systems research group (20+ PhD Students, postdocs and Associate Proffesors from UC)
- Multidisciplinary team of experts in energy transition
- Experience in multi-country project coordination
- Specialized in energy systems operation and expansion
- Part of a top 2% university system globally
- Ongoing collaboration with institutions and universities in the European Union
- Adaptable and responsive in interdisciplinary, cross-sector projects
- Capacity to contribute at all project levels:
- As work package leaders
- As case study partners
- As co-designers in concept/proposal writing
- Stakeholder engagement, and local-to-global knowledge transfer
