Race Car Cornering: Some Fundamental Concepts

Each of us have an intuitive understanding of how a car manages to go around a corner, but we don’t need to think about this much in a road car. In race car engineering the cornering performance becomes critical for success, so a more explicit understanding of the cars cornering behavior is required. Here I’ll present a conceptual analysis of vehicle and suspension behavior during cornering and show how we combine this with knowledge of some interesting tyre characteristics to tune performance.
