Integrated Smart Material Actuators for Medical Devices

Functional and spatial integration of actuators can be a demanding design criterion for medical devices such as surgical instruments or implanted devices. With smart materials like piezoceramics or shape memory alloys pathways can be paved to enhance integration and improve functional properties. The seminar gives two examples of ongoing research activities in the Mechatronics Group at Technische Universität Ilmenau, Germany. One is on novel approaches towards future hearing aids for people mainly suffering from middle ear diseases and the other focuses on new approaches in instrument design in brain neurosurgery for biopsy and tumor treatment. State of the art are presented, new results are shown and the perspective of future challenges are pointed out.
