Why did you choose to come to UC?
After many years of working in Information Technology as a Business Analyst in Vietnam, I wanted to deepen my knowledge in this area. After reviewing many leading universities around the world, I found UC to offer both strong academic foundations and real-world industry opportunities.
UC stood out for its reputation in Information Systems, its close connections with New Zealand and global businesses, and its supportive environment for international students. This aligns with the kind of future I aspire to: practical, innovative, dynamic, and people focused.
What do you like about your degree and major at UC?
As someone who values practicality and efficiency in using technology to solve daily problems, I chose the Master of Business Information Systems (MBIS) because it combines business and technology. What I appreciate most is how applied the learning is. I have had the opportunity to participate in industry projects, analyse real business cases, and work on hands-on assignments that develop skills employers seek. Having successfully completed many projects in Vietnam, I find strong parallels when integrating my personal experience with the perspectives offered by the programme.
What is the support like for international students?
The international student support is outstanding. From help with the process of transitioning between two countries to wellbeing support and academic workshops, UC makes it easier to adapt to a new environment and lifestyle.
UC’s Internationalisation Team has been incredible; they recognise your challenges as an international student and genuinely want you to succeed. Their warm hosting of a variety of activities helped me learn more while feeling very welcomed.
How do you find life at UC?
Life at UC is vibrant and student-centred. What I value most is the balance; there is a strong academic environment, but also a culture that fosters personal growth, friendships, and community. The campus is beautiful and peaceful, which helps me stay focused. At the same time, there are countless events, activities, and opportunities that help you feel constantly connected.
What do you like about living in Christchurch?
Christchurch is such a peaceful and relaxing city. I love how safe, green, and friendly it is. Everything is accessible. You can study in the morning, walk on the beach in the afternoon, and enjoy great food at night. The city also has many beautiful landscapes, with green hills perfect for hiking and stunning beaches where you can watch the sunset. As an international student, I truly appreciate the diverse and global community. It feels like a home away from home.
What do you get up to when you are not studying?
I enjoy exploring beautiful places around Christchurch with my family. We go on road trips and experiences unique to New Zealand, such as observing dolphins and spectacular scenery on a cruise in summer or enjoying coffee while admiring snow-covered mountains in winter.
I also love connecting with other professionals through events on MeetUp. It is a good opportunity to understand my industry more in this city. Recently, I have particularly enjoyed participating in programmes outside of my academic course to meet new friends. All these activities make my life very lively and enjoyable while teaching me many lessons and skills.
How well do you think your degree is preparing you for your future career?
The MBIS programme has provided me with a solid foundation in both technology and business. It develops both technical and professional skills, such as business analysis, system design, data management, and project management. What stands out is the emphasis on real-world experience through group projects, case studies, and client-based work.
As someone skilled at applying knowledge to real-world problems and developing technologies based on experience, I feel much more confident about entering the workforce. I have already practiced solving the kinds of challenges I faced in my previous role as a Business Analyst; now I am ready to apply those skills to future opportunities in New Zealand.
What benefits does working part-time while studying provide?
My part-time job as a Sales Consultant has been valuable because it strengthens my communication skills, teamwork, customer service abilities and many other skills that you can only develop in a work environment. This has helped me build confidence and gain a deeper understanding of the local culture. It also teaches me to manage my time and balance different commitments.
Would you recommend UC to other international students?
Absolutely. I would highly recommend UC to any international student. The lecturers and staff are always supportive and available throughout your studies. UC offers not only a strong academic programme but also a complete experience: supportive staff, a beautiful campus, industry connections, and a welcoming environment. It has helped me grow academically, personally, and professionally. I feel truly grateful for the opportunities I have had here, and I believe UC provides students with many things they need to succeed.
