"Education at UC is very engaging and research-driven."

HOW TO APPLY
From Bangladesh to University of Canterbury, New Zealand
Master of Professional Accounting

Why did you choose to come to UC?

I chose UC because it is one of New Zealand’s most reputable universities, ranked highly for both research and teaching. As a Bangladeshi student, I was looking for a university with strong international recognition in accounting and business. The pathway programme gave me the foundation to transition smoothly into postgraduate study, and UC’s Master of Accounting provides a globally relevant curriculum with strong links to professional bodies like CA ANZ and CPA Australia. UC’s welcoming environment for international students also played a big role in my decision.

What do you like most about UC?

UC provides such a supportive environment. The student support services, such as academic writing help, career consultations, and international student advisors, have been very helpful. I also appreciate the beautiful campus — it has modern facilities, lots of green spaces, and a friendly atmosphere. On the academic side, I value how approachable the lecturers are and how UC emphasises critical thinking, teamwork, and practical applications of accounting concepts.

What is the education like at UC?

Education at UC is very engaging and research-driven. Unlike the traditional lecture-heavy style I was used to back in Bangladesh, UC combines lectures with tutorials, group projects, and case studies. This balance makes learning more practical and industry-focused. UC also emphasises professional skills like communication, ethics, and problem-solving, which are essential for accountants in today’s global business environment. The focus on applied learning and strong connections with New Zealand industries really makes UC stand out.

How was your transition from your pathway to UC?

The Postgraduate Certificate in Business pathway prepared me well for the transition. It helped me adjust to the academic expectations of a New Zealand university, especially in terms of writing style, referencing, and independent study. It also gave me confidence in communicating in English and working in diverse groups. By the time I started my Master’s programme, I felt ready and supported, which made the transition much smoother than I had expected.

How do you find life in Christchurch and what do you like most about it?

Life in Christchurch is peaceful, safe, and very student-friendly. Compared to Dhaka, it feels less crowded and more relaxed, which makes it easier to focus on my studies. The city has a vibrant international community, great public transport, and lots of cultural and outdoor activities. I especially enjoy the natural beauty, with beaches, mountains, and parks all nearby. Christchurch gives me a good balance between academic life and a healthy lifestyle.

How do you find the UC student experience?

UC is very diverse and welcoming. There are many clubs and societies that make it easy to meet people from different backgrounds. As an international student, I never feel isolated because UC promotes inclusivity. I particularly like the library resources, career development centre, and networking opportunities through guest lectures and workshops. The multicultural environment has also helped me grow personally and professionally.

How well do you think your degree is preparing you for your future career?

The Master of Professional Accounting at UC is preparing me strongly for a career in professional accounting, both in New Zealand and internationally. The programme not only covers technical accounting knowledge but also emphasises ethics, leadership, and analytical skills. What stands out is the way UC links theory with practice, especially through real-world case studies and industry engagement. I feel confident that the degree will make me competitive in the global job market and prepare me for professional certifications like CA and CPA.

Would you recommend UC to other international students?

Yes, definitely. The university offers a high-quality education, supportive services, and an inclusive campus environment. For students coming from Bangladesh, UC provides an excellent opportunity to study in a safe, multicultural city while gaining an internationally respected degree. The pathway programme also makes it easier to adjust academically and culturally, which is a big advantage.
