10 June 2025

How to enrol in a Better Start Literacy Approach course as a Teacher Aide at UC.

HOW TO APPLY
1

Prepare your identity documents

Ask your Principal or a local JP to sign and stamp a copy of the photo page of your NZ passport or your NZ birth certificate and confirm in writing that they have sighted the original.

If you have had a change of name (for example through marriage), you will also need this done for a document that shows both your original name and your current name (eg a marriage certificate).  More information here.

If you do not have NZ citizenship, check which documents you will need to provide here

2

Log in to myUC

Create a myUC account. If you already have a account, you can log in using your existing login details.

Use your personal email address when creating an account so we can stay connected during school holidays, while you're on leave, or if you change schools.

Call 0800 827 748 if you have any problems logging in.

3

Provide your personal details

Identity details

Provide your citizenship details, NSN, and personal details.

Upload a scan of your verified identity documents (eg passport or birth certificate) – see step 1 above.

If you have had a change of name (for example through marriage), you will also need to provide a verified copy of a change of name document (eg a marriage certificate).

Study history
Provide information about your secondary/high school education. (MOE requires this information be collected for ALL tertiary students in NZ).

Note: If you haven’t completed high school, are at least 20 years old and ‘domestic’ (ie NZ/Australian citizen/resident) you can use the ‘20’+ admission reason to study at UC (more info here).. This admission reason will automatically be applied based on your DOB. You will still have to complete the ‘University Entrance’ question,as this data is collected by MOE for all applications, so can just select your highest high school qualification (e.g. NCEA Level 1, School Certificate, Not known).

Additional details
Provide your permanent address, emergency contact details, ethnicity, learning needs, and the level of study you have already completed.

Note: You can save and resume your application if you want to do it in stages - just remember to submit it when you've finished or it won't be processed.

4

Add the Teacher Aide course

Search for all 'MCED' courses and select the MCED101 course by clicking on the '+' icon, then save and continue, and 'complete application'.

5

Complete your enrolment

You will soon receive an Enrolment Agreement to accept in myUC. This must be accepted and the course fee ($339.20) paid (by you or by your employer*) to complete the enrolment process. You will then receive an email (to the email address you used to create your myUC account) confirming that you are fully enrolled.

*if your employer is paying course costs on your behalf and requires an Invoice to be issued to them for your fees, UC requires an email directly from your employer to studentfinance@canterbury.ac.nz, with a guarantee of payment. The email should also include your full name, student ID number, and the amount of fees being paid, plus invoicing details. Once this email has been received, UC will invoice your employer directly for your fees, and your enrolment will be completed (or your fees adjusted to reflect your Sponsorship).
