Set yourself up for exam success

Get exam-ready with practical study tips and ways to look after your wellbeing.

HOW TO APPLY

With final assignments and exams approaching, now is a great time to get organised and find a study routine that works for you.

Preparing well for exams isn't just about studying harder. It's about creating healthy routines, using effective study techniques and making time to look after yourself.

Study smarter, not harder

  • Create a realistic study schedule: Plan what you need to cover and break your study into smaller, manageable tasks. Focus on one topic at a time, set achievable goals and schedule regular breaks to help you stay focused.

  • Find a study space that works for you: Choose somewhere comfortable and free from distractions. Whether it's the UC Library, a campus study space or somewhere at home, find an environment where you can concentrate.

  • Test yourself: Instead of just rereading your notes, try using flashcards, practice quizzes or past exam questions to check what you know and identify areas that need more attention.

  • Put it into your own words: Summarise key ideas without looking at your notes or try explaining a concept out loud as if you're teaching someone else. This can help you identify gaps in your understanding.

  • Space out your revision: Revisit topics over several days rather than trying to learn everything at once. Regularly reviewing material can help information stick.

  • Plan ahead: Give yourself enough time to cover your topics and revisit anything you're finding difficult. Remember to acknowledge your progress and reward yourself when you meet your study goals.

Incorporate your wellbeing into your study plan

Exam season can be stressful, especially if you're preparing for your first university exams. It's normal to feel anxious or overwhelmed at times, so be kind to yourself and remember that looking after your wellbeing is just as important as studying.

Try to maintain healthy habits, including getting enough sleep, eating regular meals and making time to move your body. Be mindful of your caffeine and alcohol intake, as these can affect your sleep and wellbeing.

Remember to take regular breaks from studying. Getting some fresh air, practising mindfulness or stepping away from social media can help you reset and manage stress. Stay connected with friends and whānau, and make time for activities you enjoy.

You don't have to navigate exam season on your own. For support services and resources, visit UC Wellbeing or follow UC Wellbeing on Instagram for the latest wellbeing tips and updates.

Remember, support is available

You don't have to navigate exam season on your own – there are support services available.
