The annual event gives local secondary school students the opportunity to experience university life, explore different subject areas and learn more about the study pathways available after high school.
Discovery Day is designed to help students make informed decisions about their future. Through a programme of short information sessions, students were introduced to a range of UC subject areas and study options, with each session connecting academic interests to possible pathways and career opportunities.
A key focus of the day was showcasing the initiatives we offer to help them succeed. UC promotes an inclusive learning environment where different forms of knowledge are shared, explored and challenged. Programmes such as Kia Angitu, UC’s student success programme, are in place to help students engage with study, reach their goals and feel supported throughout their university experience.
The event also gave students the chance to familiarise themselves with Ilam campus and experience the wider UC community. From morning tea to lunch from Bacon Bros, the day created opportunities for students to connect, ask questions and gain confidence in a university setting.
Discovery Day reflects UC’s values of manaakitanga, whanaungatanga and tiakitanga by creating a welcoming environment where students can feel supported, build connections and begin to see themselves as part of a diverse and vibrant university community.
For many students, the event is an early step in shaping their future study plans. By linking the subjects they enjoy at school with tertiary study options and potential career paths, Discovery Day helps students leave campus with a clearer sense of what is possible and the support available here to help them succeed.
UC looks forward to welcoming many of these students back to campus as they continue exploring their study options and take their next steps toward tertiary education.
