Representatives from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras and the University of Canterbury at the MoU signing in India.
This partnership marks a significant step in Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury (UC)’s engagement with India, supporting its Transnational Education commitments, and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras’ (IIT-Madras) global outreach strategy. It focuses on creating scalable, flexible pathways for students and reflects a shared commitment by both institutions to expand access to global education, strengthen research and academic exchange, and leverage digital platforms to reach learners worldwide.
The two institutions have signed an MoU establishing a comprehensive framework for cooperation across degree programmes, online education, research, and academic exchange.
Professor Prathap Haridoss, Dean of Academic Courses at IIT-Madras, said the partnership reflects the institute’s commitment to creating meaningful global pathways for its students.
“By combining the strength of our Bachelor of Science programmes with the University of Canterbury’s advanced postgraduate offerings, we are enabling learners to seamlessly transition into international education that upholds our core values of academic rigor and modular flexibility.”
Professor Michael Grimley, Dean of Future Learning and Development at UC, said the collaboration marks an important step in deepening the University’s engagement with India, combining strengths in digital innovation, research and industry-aligned education.
“Together, we are creating flexible, globally connected learning opportunities that will benefit students, academics, and partners across both institutions.”
A key feature is the structured Master’s pathway for students enrolled in IIT-Madras’ Bachelor of Science programmes. Eligible students who meet academic requirements will be able to apply for postgraduate study at UC. Selected candidates will complete their Bachelor of Science degree at IIT-Madras and progress to the Master of Applied Data Science programme at UC, creating a seamless international academic pathway.
The MoU also facilitates student and staff mobility between the two institutions and enables exchange programmes, joint research initiatives, and co-teaching opportunities, alongside academic engagement through conferences, seminars, and collaborative discussions.
Further, both institutions will explore expanded online and hybrid learning models, including courses offered through digital platforms such as SWAYAM and NPTEL, increasing access to high-quality education for learners across geographies.
The Centre for Outreach and Digital Education (CODE) at IIT-Madras will serve as the coordinating centre for initiatives under this partnership, including digital programmes and outreach activities.
