Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury is celebrating the recognition of Vice-Chancellor Professor Cheryl de la Rey and Pou Whakarae Professor Te Maire Tau in The Press 2026 Power List, highlighting their leadership, influence and contribution to Ōtautahi Christchurch and Aotearoa New Zealand.
Since joining UC in 2019, Professor De la Rey has led the University through a period of significant transformation. Under her leadership, UC has moved beyond the challenges of the post-earthquake era to a position of renewed stability and growth, with record student enrolments and a strengthened sense of direction and confidence across the institution. Her tenure has been marked by a focus on people, performance and purpose, helping to position UC strongly for the future.
Professor Tau, a distinguished historian and Ūpoko of Ngāi Tūāhuriri, is recognised for his enduring influence within UC and beyond. He has played a key role in embedding Ngāi Tahu knowledge and perspectives within the University, while also contributing to national conversations on iwi development, including new approaches to iwi economy. His leadership extends across communities and kaupapa, including his role in advancing significant discussions around freshwater rights.
Together, their inclusion in the 2026 Power List reflects the depth of leadership at UC and the University’s ongoing contribution to knowledge, community and the future of Aotearoa New Zealand.
The Press Power List also recognises University of Canterbury alumni making a significant impact across the region, including Sir Tipene O’Regan, who holds an Honorary Doctorate from UC, Ethique founder Brianne West, and Canterbury property developer Philip Carter, among others.
