On Tuesday 31 March, hundreds of year 12 taiohi Māori and their kaiako arrived at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury (UC) for Aukaha Tau 12, an event designed to give students a practical introduction to university life, helping them see a future for themselves at UC.
The day began with a mihi whakatau and whakawhanaungatanga, followed by a cultural narrative tour of campus led by current ākonga Māori. This offered visiting students an introduction to campus through the lens of te ao Māori.
Students then took part in two interactive faculty sessions aligned to their interests, exploring a range of subjects and study pathways available at UC.
To close the day, a student panel and Q&A gave taiohi the chance to hear directly from current ākonga Māori about their experiences, including study, support services, and life on campus.
Aukaha Tau 12 continues to strengthen connections with taiohi Māori, supporting them to feel confident and informed as they consider the next steps in their education.
