National law conference reflects on 35 years of the Bill of Rights Act

The University of Canterbury hosted the “Bill of Rights Act: Legacy and Lessons – Where to Now” national conference in Ōtautahi Christchurch this week.

The two-day event brought together leading judges, scholars, practitioners, students and community representatives to reflect on the 35-year legacy of the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act and explore its future role in protecting rights.

Keynote speakers were introduced by Chief Ombudsman John Allen and included the Right Honourable Dame Helen Winkelmann GNZM, Chief Justice of New Zealand, and Professor Kate O’Regan from the University of Oxford, alongside a strong line-up of national and international experts. The conference also welcomed The Rt Hon Sir Geoffrey Palmer KCMG, AC, KC., Kathryn Dalziel, The Hon Justice Matthew Palmer, Dr Andrew Butler QC, The Hon Pamela Tate AM KC, Julia Whaipooti (Ngāti Porou) Human Rights Commission Tatau-Urutahi | Tino Rangatiratanga Leader and Canadian disability lawyer/advocate David Lepofsky.    

Co-hosted by the New Zealand Law Society and supported by the Borrin Foundation and Canterbury Law Review Trust, the conference highlighted UC’s role in shaping legal research, education and policy for a changing society.
