Code of Ethical Practice

10 March 2026

Chaplaincy sometimes involves deep and personal work. It should take place on the basis of trust between two or more people. The particular dynamics of chaplaincy require good frameworks to keep everyone involved safe. Transparent and robust codes of ethical practice help ensure that both those offering and receiving care can know what is and isn’t ok.

HOW TO APPLY

Chaplains at UC are members of the Aotearoa New Zealand Tertiary Chaplaincy Association (ANZTCA). A number of us are also licensed by the Anglican Church in the Diocese of Christchurch. If you have any questions or concerns, our door is always open.

We acknowledge that we come from a Christian worldview. As a part of ANZTCA, however, we are also committed to upholding interfaith understanding and offer our services freely to students and staff regardless of belief or background. We always strive to ensure everyone we meet is treated with respect. Everyone should be able to access our services in a way where they feel safe and free from manipulation or abuse of any kind.

We also uphold the ethical code as required by the Canons of the Anglican Church, and participate fully in the complaints process. Both these documents can be found below for you to read.
