Why did you choose UC?

After completing my MBA back in India, I discovered the importance of data in making business decisions and realised I needed to learn more. New Zealand was always on my list, and UC ticked all the boxes for me. It promised a lot of support and services, which is key for students that are far from home.

What sets the education at UC apart?

UC puts an emphasis on practical skills and real-world applications. You learn something and then go out and start doing it from day one. And it’s all things that are happening right now. The professors are not just knowledgeable, but they’re really passionate about what they do, which makes our learning very exciting.

What is the support like for international students?

UC provides support from day one with the international orientation programmes. We get language support services and dedicated support to help us even just adapt to life in New Zealand. You can see UC’s core values of empathy and caring throughout campus, across all staff and services.

How was your overall experience at UC?

UC promises a fulfilling and balanced life. You have the academics on one side, with lectures and labs and research, and you’ve got the social, fun aspects on the other, with clubs and gigs and activities. UC is the perfect place to give you that all around balance.

What do you like about living in Christchurch?

Christchurch feels like a brand new city with a lot of opportunities. There are always new restaurants and places to explore. It’s a lot more affordable than New Zealand’s other big cities. It’s home to a lot of parks and gardens, and it’s also a gateway to a visit all the other attractions the South Island has.

How well do you think your degree prepared you for your current job?

Gaining the data analysis skills to add to my business skills was a game-changer. Now I understand the language of business and how to find patterns in numbers. I can use these skills to create impact in the real world. And the skills are flexible and transferrable across different fields.

What key factors do you feel make you employable, and how did you develop them?

Adaptability and problem-solving abilities are two key skills I gained while studying. Working on group projects, presentations, and case studies involves a lot of teamwork and interacting with diverse cultures. You learn how to adapt and be flexible, how to approach problems in different ways. These soft skills, added to your existing skills, make you really employable.

How did working part-time while studying benefit you?

I worked in a market research company where I spoke to people from every region in New Zealand. It gave me great insight into how things are across the country, and how to talk to all different types of people. Having work experience in New Zealand is super important if you want to work here after graduating.

Would you recommend UC to other international students?

Absolutely. UC is committed to being inclusive and fostering growth and innovation. It’s a very supportive environment that incorporates its core values across campus to include all cultures and students from everywhere. I’m a testament to how UC can change lives.
