Sustainable and earthquake-resilient buildings: Investigating the embodied environmental impact of viscous dampers

HOW TO APPLY

This project investigates the environmental impact of viscous dampers for structural applications. Viscous dampers have been adopted worldwide to improve the performance of buildings during earthquakes. Recent research shows these devices could reduce the life-cycle environmental impact of buildings in earthquakeprone regions. Nevertheless, the data on the embodied environmental impact of the devices themselves is limited. 

In this role, the student will: 

• Review the existing research on the environmental impact of buildings with viscous dampers.

• Connect with viscous damper manufacturers globally to gather data on the device environmental impacts.

• Perform a cradle-to-grave life cycle assessment (LCA) of a viscous damper.

• Compare the LCA findings with the data gathered to provide recommendations for future research on buildings with viscous dampers. 

• Potential to participate in a conference or journal publication as an author for interested candidates. 

Prior experience with LCA or undergraduate research is an asset; however, it is not required for this role. 

This project offers the following learning opportunities:

• Develop technical skills for LCA, including understanding the underlying theory, practical applications, and software skills.

• Become familiar with how viscous dampers are used in buildings to improve seismic performance.

• Gain soft and technical communication skills through outreach to damper manufacturing companies.
