Biography
Carol Devine is a researcher, writer and conceptual artist based in Canada. She led the first civilian cleanup expedition in Antarctica, a collaboration of The VIEW Foundation and The Russian Antarctic Expedition (RAE). Carol co-wrote a cultural history book on the project, The Antarctic Book of Cooking and Cleaning, and another project emerged from that experience, Mapping Antarctic women. She participated in and documented a clean-up expedition in Svalbard in 2015, did a garbage survey while in Antarctica in 2016 and helped sample microplastics in a Scotland circumnavigation with the sailing and science group, eXXpedition, in 2017. Carol is a member of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research Humanities and Social Sciences Expert Group, a member of the Society of Women Geographers and a Fellow of The Explorers Club. Carol works on climate change, environmental degradation and health for Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders.
