The below UC degrees are aligned with four key professional bodies:
The four professional bodies are:
Becoming a member as a UC graduate
Graduates of the above UC programmes are currently eligible for provisional membership. Provisional members must then complete the Graduate Diploma of Chartered Accounting, which consists of nine subjects delivered by CA ANZ, alongside three years of mentored practical experience with an approved employer.
Graduates of the above UC programmes are currently eligible for associate membership. Associate members must then complete the CPA Program, which consists of six subjects, and 36 months of relevant full-time experience.
The standard requirement is to pass 13 ACCA examinations, but graduates of the above UC programmes are currently eligible for exemptions from nine of these, leaving just four exams to complete. Graduates must also complete 36 months of supervised practical experience.
Membership involves passing a series of exams, with graduates of the above UC programmes currently eligible for certain exemptions. It also requires three years of relevant practical experience. On completion, members gain the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation.
Returning home
International students planning to return to their home country should check whether additional local professional requirements apply. For example, becoming a certified public accountant (CPA) in China requires passing a separate national examination under the auspices of the Chinese Institute of Certified Public Accountants (CICPA). While international memberships such as ACCA and CPA Australia are widely valued by Chinese employers, they do not remove the need to pass the national examination and fulfil the local CPA requirements.
Comparison with other New Zealand universities
Each professional body requires graduates to complete additional study requirements, which most people do alongside their job over three years while fulfilling the practical experience requirements, with the costs often covered by employers.
Some other universities offer the ability to complete the additional CA ANZ or CPA Australia study requirements during their degree. However, this involves extra time, workload and/or cost.
