Dr Alan D. Hemmings is a specialist on Antarctic governance based in Perth in Western Australia, and an Adjunct Associate Professor at Gateway Antarctica. His Antarctic operational experience includes time with the British, French and New Zealand national programmes, Greenpeace, and as a Government observer of Antarctic tourism, and multiple visits to various locations around the Antarctic and across the sub-Antarctic. He participated in dozens of Antarctic Treaty System meetings between 1989 and 2010. His current research focuses on Antarctic geopolitics, considering the roles of globalism, changing world-order and contemporary roles of territorial sovereignty and, particularly, nationalism. Major recent publications (see below for a full list) include consideration of the Antarctic in 'History Lessons for the Arctic: What International Maritime Disputes Tell us about a New Ocean' (2016: Brzezinski Institute on Geostrategy and Center for Strategic & International Studies, Washington DC), 'Handbook on the Politics of Antarctica' edited with Klaus Dodds and Peder Roberts (2017: Edward Elgar); and 'International Polar Law' edited with Donald R. Rothwell (Forthcoming 2018: Edward Elgar).
