HOW TO APPLY

Overview

Geospatial Data Science

Geospatial Data Science develops methodologies for collecting, evaluating, modelling, and visualising location-based data and spatial interactions. It is situated in the study of geography and draws on computer and information sciences, remote sensing, cartography, and statistics.

We build scientific knowledge through methodical consideration of how space is represented to inform on accuracy, uncertainty, scale, and fitness for use. You will learn to apply these considerations to spatial data from satellite, airborne, drone, and field collection, as well as novel social and environmental data through GPS-enabled devices.

There are four postgraduate pathways for Geospatial Data Science:

The programmes can be pursued alongside an existing career with flexible arrangements for part-time study.

Geospatial Data Science

  • These qualifications equip professionals with advanced geospatial data science skills for government, industry, and research.
  • Gain skills in geospatial data methods, programming, geospatial technologies, and communication.
  • A combination of lab, fieldwork, and internships are used to solidify geospatial data science skills.

Geospatial Data Science

Certain courses are compulsory depending on the degree programme of study.

We recommend always starting with GISC401 Foundations of Geospatial Data Science which is offered in Semester 1 (February).

Within each programme there are options to pick electives from both GISC courses and non-GISC electives in related areas such as data science, statistics, and domain applications.

The Master of Geospatial Data Science also requires completing a Geospatial Data Science Project. GISC402 Geospatial Data Science Research should be taken later in the programme to lead into the culminating research project.

The Master of Science involves a thesis: GISC690 MSc Thesis. GISC402 Geospatial Data Science Research should be taken prior to starting the MSc programme.

Geospatial Data Science

Our programmes are designed to meet the surging demand for geospatial data analysts, developers, and data managers. We provide opportunities to engage with industry and government partners for professional internships.

Join the growth of the geospatial industry in Aotearoa New Zealand and globally by training to be an employment-ready graduate who can handle modern workflows for geospatial analysis on environmental, disaster, transportation, health, and other fields.
